Six Gaza children, including newborn girl, die of cold weather as Israel blocks aid

(File) Palestinians are seen in a tent camp for the displaced in Rafah, southern Gaza.

Several Palestinian children, including a newborn girl, have died due to severe cold weather in Gaza as Israel continues to deliberately deny or obstruct the delivery of tents and mobile homes into the territory.

At least six children died overnight from hypothermia in Gaza, according to the local health authorities, who said one of the victims, a baby girl called Sham, was just a few days old.

Five of the children, they said, died in the Friends of the Patient Hospital in the Remal neighborhood of Gaza City, while the sixth child succumbed to winter weather in the southern city of Khan Younis.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians are living in tents placed on the rubble of their destroyed homes across Gaza, where the temperatures can fall to 6C at this time of year.

Hamas said in a statement that the children died as a result of Israel’s “criminal policies,” and “its prevention of the entry of humanitarian aid and shelter materials” for more than two million people.

The children’s death, it said, took place at a time “when the international community continues its silence on addressing the unprecedented humanitarian disaster” unfolding in Gaza as a result of the Israeli “aggression and siege.”

Despite a ceasefire agreement that took effect more than a month ago, Israel still largely blocks the entry of various essential items into the besieged territory, including tents, mobile homes, and heavy machinery necessary to clear rubble and retrieve bodies.

Under the ceasefire deal, Israel must allow some 600 trucks a day of aid to enter the besieged Palestinian territory.

Hamas demanded that the mediators— Qatar and Egypt— take immediate action to stop the regime’s “violation of the ceasefire agreement, oblige it to implement the humanitarian protocol associated with it, and ensure the entry of shelter, heating and urgent medical aid supplies” to Gaza.

Palestinian officials have repeatedly warned that the Gaza ceasefire deal is at risk of collapse, as the regime of Benjamin Netanyahu is deliberately blocking aid and reconstruction efforts to push Palestinians out of their homeland.
