A full scale war in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman and north of the Indian Ocean has engaged the Iranian Army's navy, air force, air defense and ground force.

This is the scenario of a large scale military exercise dubbed Zolfaqar-1400. Conducted over a million square kilometer area, the maneuver saw the use of domestically built sea-launched cruise missiles, torpedoes, air to surface missiles and submarines.

The three-day drill also involved the latest domestically built drones such as Simorq and Mohajer 4, which conducted reconnaissance and combat operations against mock enemy vessels.

Iranian military officials boast the country's capabilities in indigenizing the defense industry, and say they owe this to four decades of US arms embargoes that have blocked Iran's access to international defense equipment.

The army says the drill aims to test the country’s indigenously built equipment and to improve its prowess in safeguarding its territorial waters amid heightened tensions in the region, which recently saw Iran showing a footage of its commandos thwarting an attempt by the US Navy to seize an Iranian oil tanker in the Sea of Oman.

One of the major goals of this drill is to boost synergy between the four branches of the Iranian army; a goal which the army say is not a threat to any country, but is a contributor to peace and security in a strategic region that's rife with piracy and extraterritorial threats.
