Syrian army soldiers backed by fighters from allied popular defense groups have managed to retake control of a strategic village in the country’s southwestern province of Quneitra.

Syrian forces liberated the village of Samadaniyah on Thursday following a gun battle with the extremists, Lebanon’s Arabic-language al-Ahed news website reported. Scores of terrorists were also killed or injured in the fighting, it said.

Meanwhile, the Katib Thuwar al-Sham said one of its high-ranking commanders had been killed during clashes with Syrian army troopers.

The militant group identified him as Ibrahim Mohammed Adnan who was on the southern outskirts of Aleppo some 355 km (220 miles) north of the capital, Damascus.

Deadly clashes further broke out among terrorists from two rival militant outfits over the control of a town near Damascus.

The infighting reportedly took place in Dumayr, located 40 kilometers (24 miles) northeast of Damascus, between Jaysh al-Islam and Jaysh Tahrir al-Sham militants.

Also on Thursday, Syrian soldiers and pro-government forces stormed Dar’ al-Islam militant group's positions in the southern province of Dara’a, killing or injuring scores of them.

Additionally, a number of Daesh terrorists were killed or injured in clashes with Syrian army forces in the city of Dayr al-Zawr, located 450 kilometers (280 miles) northeast of the capital.

The conflict in Syria, which flared in March 2011, has claimed the lives of more than 250,000 people and left over one million injured, according to the United Nations.

The world body says 12.2 million people, including more than 5.6 million children, remain in need of humanitarian assistance in Syria. The foreign-sponsored militancy has also displaced 7.6 million people.
