Putin hails Moscow actions in Black Sea peninsula in 2014
Russian President Vladimir Putin has hailed his country’s actions in the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in 2014.
Putin says Russia’s decisive and timely actions were meant to prevent a conflict in Crimea similar to the one that followed later in eastern Ukraine. Crimea rejoined the Russian federation after breaking away from Ukraine last year. An overwhelming majority of Crimeans voted in a March 16 referendum in support of the move. But this angered both Ukraine and its Western allies especially NATO, which has ever since increased its military presence in the region. Meanwhile, Russia has reportedly started military exercises in Crimea and Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The drills are a tit-for-tat move after the military alliance recently launched yet another naval drill in Eastern Europe.
