Chinese President Xi Jinping has visited North Korea amid growing global tensions to reinforce ties between the two neighboring countries.

China's president arrived in Pyongyang, the capital, on Monday and met with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un. Portraits of Xi and flags of both nations are lined along the streets across Pyongyang.

Xi's two-day state visit to Pyongyang is his first trip to the North Korean capital in nearly seven years, as Beijing looks to reinforce the ties between the traditional allies.

It comes in the back of him hosting separate summits with the leaders of Russia and the United States.

Talks between Xi and Kim are expected to cover economic ties and international issues, as well as ways to coordinate among Pyongyang, Beijing, and Moscow.

China's foreign ministry said the summit will see an exchange of views between the two leaders on bilateral and common issues.

This may include rising tensions in West Asia due to the recent US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran and its allies.

However, no specific agenda has been mentioned.

Foreign experts predict the meeting will have big ramifications on bilateral ties and beyond, as they both seek to fully restore their traditional alliance in the face of separate confrontations with the US.

Before Xi's visit, North Korea on Sunday firmly rejected US claims that Washington and Beijing share a common goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, said the nation would steadily expand its nuclear arsenal in the face of US-led threats.

She dismissed as “false information” a US announcement that US President Donald Trump and Xi confirmed their shared goal to denuclearize North Korea in their summit in Beijing last month.

“Some officials in the United States have failed to wake from their escapist and anachronistic dreams.”

North Korea has been focusing on enlarging its nuclear arsenal since the North Korean leader's high-stakes diplomacy with Trump failed in 2019.

The North Korean military has been strengthening itself, bolstering its capabilities against the threat posed by the United States and its regional allies.

It has developed its nuclear and missile technology with Russia's help and contributed troops to Moscow's military campaign in Ukraine in return.

It also announced plans to expand its missile production capacity by two and a half times over the next 5 years as well as modernize its destroyer fleet as part of improving its overall deterrence plan.
