Acting US ambassador to Ukraine to step down over ‘differences’ with Trump

Outgoing US Charge D’Affaires to Ukraine Julie Davis

The acting US ambassador to Ukraine will step down from her position after less than a year in the job, the State Department has said, amid reports of “differences” with President Donald Trump.

The Financial Times cited three people familiar with the matter as saying that US Charge D’Affaires to Ukraine Julie Davis grew frustrated with her role amid “differences with President Donald Trump over his dwindling support for Ukraine.”

The state department denied the report as “false”, saying she was retiring in June 2026 after a three-decade career as a diplomat.

Davis was named by the Trump administration in May 2025 after her predecessor, fellow career diplomat Bridget Brink, stepped down due to her opposition to the Trump administration’s policy on Ukraine.

Davis has also been serving as the US ambassador to Cyprus since 2023, operating a dual role during her time in Kiev.

The Trump administration has been pushing both Kiev and Moscow to find a compromise to end the war, Europe’s most destructive conflict since World War II.

Trump said Ukraine could cede territory to secure an agreement. However, his attempts have so far failed to bring the war to an end through ceasefire talks, which have now largely stalled as Washington has concentrated its focus on its illegal aggression against Iran.
