China has voiced the country’s supports for Iran in safeguarding its national stability and “legitimate rights and interests,” while calling for restraint and peaceful resolution of disputes amid US military threats.
Speaking at a regular press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded to a question asked by Press TV’s correspondent in Beijing on whether China would join Russia in supporting Iran against a US aggression.
Beijing is “closely following developments regarding Iran” she said, and reiterated that China opposes the use or threat of force in international relations.
She emphasized that the Chinese and Iranian peoples share a longstanding friendship and said Beijing backs Tehran’s efforts to maintain domestic stability and defend its lawful interests.
“China supports the Iranian government and people in upholding their nation’s stability and legitimate rights and interests,” she noted.
“Various parties should cherish peace, remain calm, and resolve differences through dialogue,” Mao said, adding that China is prepared to play a “responsible major country” role in promoting de-escalation and negotiations.
The remarks came amid heightened regional tensions. US President Donald Trump has ordered additional military deployments to the region, including an extra aircraft carrier, thousands of troops, warplanes, and guided-missile destroyers, according to US officials.
In late January, Trump spoke of “another beautiful armada” of warships heading towards Iran and said failure to reach a deal would bring consequences “far worse” than the illegal strikes of June 2025 on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Tehran has declared that it would respond decisively to any military adventurism, as in the case of the June US attacks, which prompted a ballistic missile barrage against Al Udeid, Washington’s most important regional airbase located in Qatar.
