The Iranian Foreign Ministry has condemned an armed attack near Tajikistan’s border with Afghanistan that killed three Chinese nationals working for a gold-extraction company in the country’s south.

Spokesman Esmaeil Bagahei, in a statement issued Friday, denounced Wednesday’s terrorist attack in the Shamsiddin Shohin district of Khatlon Province.

He offered condolences to the victims’ families and expressed solidarity with the Tajik and Chinese governments.

Bagahei reaffirmed Iran’s stance against all forms of terrorism, calling for stronger multilateral cooperation to prevent and counter terrorism.

China’s embassy in Dushanbe said three Chinese citizens were killed and one wounded.

Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry said the attack targeted a compound belonging to Shohin SM, a private gold-mining company operating in the district.

According to the ministry, the attackers used firearms and a drone equipped with an explosive device to strike the workers’ facility.

“As a result of the attack, three employees of Shohin SM, all Chinese citizens, were killed,” the statement read.

Afghanistan's Taliban-run Foreign Ministry, for its part, said in a statement, “The circle involved in this incident is one that makes efforts to create chaos, instability and distrust in the region.” It, however, did not identify the group.

The Kabul administration has made an initial assessment and would cooperate fully with Tajikistan, it added.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, tensions have arisen between Dushanbe and Kabul, with both accusing the other of supporting armed groups.

Dushanbe, in particular, has consistently voiced its concerns regarding factions affiliated with Daesh Khorasan (Daesh-K), Central Asian extremist networks, and armed criminal groups taking refuge within Afghan territory.

In November of last year, Tajik authorities reported that armed groups launched an attack in the same area, resulting in the death of one Chinese citizen and injuries to five others, including four Chinese nationals and a Tajik man.

Meanwhile, the Afghan Interior Ministry reported on Thursday that a delegation, headed by the governor of Badakhshan province and a high-ranking Taliban border forces commander, Maulavi Abdul Mannan Hasan, had made a visit to Tajikistan.

The ministry stated that their delegation held discussions with officials in Tajikistan's Badakhshan region, focusing on cross-border collaboration and security coordination. However, Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry has not made any public comments regarding the visit.
