Gaza ceasefire violations
The Israeli military has conducted a new wave of attacks in Gaza, despite the ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Israeli forces carried out two air raids and a demolition operation in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza, as well as a raid in Beit Lahia, in the north. Additional demolitions took place in the al-Tuffah neighborhood, east of Gaza City. Heavy gunfire was also reported near the al-Shakoush area, northwest of Rafah. Meanwhile, Gaza’s Civil Defense says its crews have recovered 51 bodies from a mass grave in the courtyard of a clinic in Gaza City. Since the ceasefire, Israeli forces have carried out near-daily attacks in Gaza, killing at least 245 people. The genocidal war on Gaza has claimed the lives of around 69,200 Palestinians since October 2023.
Calls for UEFA ban on Israel
The chorus of support for suspending Israeli teams from sporting events has gathered more voices. More than 70 athletes have called on the Union of European Football Associations to suspend Israel over human rights violations against Palestinians. In a letter sent to UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin, the group Athletes for Peace urged Europe’s football body to cut ties with the Israel Football Association. The letter said that no shared venue, stage, or arena in international civil society should welcome a regime that commits genocide, apartheid, and other crimes against humanity. It asserts that football belongs to everyone, warning that allowing people who harm others' humanity into the sport risks depriving football of its core values. The athletes warn UEFA risks complicity through continued cooperation with Israel. The appeal follows similar calls from Turkey and Ireland and several other countries. The Israeli genocidal war on Gaza has claimed more than 69,180 lives since 2023.
US govt. shutdown ends
US President Donald Trump has signed a bill ending the longest government shutdown in America’s history. The signing came just two hours after the House of Representatives approved the stopgap bill that was passed earlier by the Senate. Six Democrats joined the Republicans to vote yes. After the shutdown, thousands of federal employees had been working without pay, or laid off. They are now expected back at work on Thursday. The bill also extends funding through January under the temporary measure. The record 43-day shutdown had wide-reaching effects across the country. 42,000,000 Americans had their federal food aid delayed due to the shutdown. It also canceled or delayed more than 20,000 flights nationwide. The shutdown was triggered when Democrats declined to support a spending bill that did not include an extension of the tax credit that makes health insurance more affordable.
