Israel Gaza truce violations
The Israeli military has carried out fresh attacks in Gaza, in blatant violations of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas. Israeli armored vehicles unleashed heavy shelling on various locations in the southern city of Khan Yunis. The regime forces also launched a large-scale demolition operation in the same city. The Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza came under intense artillery fire as well. The al-Bureij refugee camp and the city of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza also witnessed Israeli bombardments. Meanwhile, as part of the Gaza truce, Israel has transferred the bodies of fifteen Palestinian prisoners to Gaza. Earlier on Wednesday, the military wing of Hamas also announced the handover of an Israeli captive’s body. This brings to 21, the total number of bodies returned by Hamas since the ceasefire took effect on October the 10th.
Gaza humanitarian crisis
The UN food agency says aid groups are racing against time to deliver food and other humanitarian supplies to Gaza to ease the suffering of Palestinians in the war-ravaged territory. The WFP spokesperson said the agency has so far managed to bring in only about half of the food aid required to meet the needs of people in Gaza. Etefa added that food prices have not fallen as much as expected since the Gaza ceasefire took effect. The truce agreement called for an average of 600 trucks of supplies per day to enter the territory, where famine was confirmed in August. That is while Gaza’s local administration says most of those trucks are still not reaching their destinations, as Israel hinders their entry.
NYC mayoral race
In the US, Zohran Mamdani has won New York’s mayoral election, becoming both the first Muslim and the youngest to hold the mayor’s office in over a century. In his acceptance speech, he had four words for the US President Donald trump. Mamdani also told his supporters that they have toppled a political dynasty. He listed out his pledges, including providing universal child care and freezing rent increases for those in rent stabilized units. The 34-year-old Democratic lawmaker surged to victory after defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Hours before polls opened in the mayoral race, President Donald Trump threatened to cut federal funds if Mamdani won. In response, Mamdani accused Trump of meddling in the election by endorsing Andrew Cuomo. He also vowed to stand up to bullies after Trump’s threat.
