'Illegal' snapback sanctions against Iran

The E3 have finally triggered the snapback mechanism to restore anti-Iran sanctions, but Tehran says it will not recognize or comply with an “illegal and unjustified” move.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf stated that Iran will continue its enrichment activities in accordance with international law, stressing that no country is obliged to comply with sanctions that were terminated nearly a decade ago.

Warning any country planning to act against Iran based on this “illegal snapback ploy,” Qalibaf said Tehran will respond decisively and retaliate against any such measures.

He further asserted that Western states use negotiations as a means to deceive and pressure Iran into abandoning its missile program.

This episode of Spotlight examines what the snapback mechanism is and what its potential consequences will be in the days ahead.
