Iraq’s foreign minister condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s UN General Assembly speech in which he threatened to target Iraq’s resistance groups.

Speaking at a press conference in New York on Friday, Fuad Hussein described Netanyahu’s comments at UNGA as “unacceptable.”

“We reject Netanyahu’s threats. They are unacceptable. An attack on any Iraqi is an attack on all of Iraq,” the minister said.

During his UNGA speech, Netanyahu threatened to “eliminate” the leaders of Iraqi resistance groups if they tried to launch attacks against Israel.

“Israel deterred Shiite militias in Iraq; they are still deterred, and their leaders, if they attack Israel, will also be gone,” Netanyahu declared.

Hussein emphasized that Iraq firmly denounces such remarks and considers them a clear violation of its sovereignty.

Since the beginning of the Israeli regime’s genocidal war on Gaza, Iraqi resistance groups have carried out multiple retaliatory operations against various targets inside the occupied territories.

On September 17, the United States designated four Iraq- and Syria-based groups as terrorist organizations, describing them as Iran-aligned militias: Harakat al-Nujaba, Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada, Harakat Ansar Allah al-Awfiya, and Kataib Imam Ali.

As Netanyahu began his address on Friday, dozens of delegations walked out of the assembly hall in symbolic protest against the Israeli regime’s atrocities in Gaza since October 7, 2023.

A total of 10 countries, including Australia, Britain, Canada, France, and Portugal, officially recognized the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the UNGA.

On Monday, Iraq’s foreign ministry welcomed these countries’ decision to recognize Palestinian statehood, calling the measure “a fundamental step towards achieving international justice,” while reaffirming Iraq’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause.

Since the start of the Gaza genocide, the Israeli regime has killed 65,549 Palestinians and injured 167,518, the majority of them women and children.
