Iran’s domestic meat supply up 28% y/y in August

The domestic production of red meat has increased by nearly a third in Iran in the calendar month to late August compared to the same month last year.

Figures by Iran’s official statistics agency (SCI) released on Saturday showed that the domestic supply of meat had reached 42,335 metric tons (mt) in the month to August 22, up 28% from the same period last year.

SCI figures showed that beef and veal had accounted for 57.66% of the meat supplied by licensed abattoirs in Iran in August, while the share of lamb and mutton rose to more than 40% over the same period.

The figures showed that domestic production of red meat in Iran in August had increased by nearly 7% against the calendar month to July 22.

The increased domestic output would be a major boost to the government’s efforts to control rampant meat prices.

In an announcement made in early June, Iran’s agriculture ministry said it had reversed an earlier decision to remove subsidies from imports of red meat after concerns were raised that the move could jeopardize food security for tens of millions in the country.

The ministry said at the time that it would also offer more support to local producers to be able to respond to the rising demand for meat.

Iran’s central bank currently earmarks US dollar at a price of 285,000 rials for imports of red meat. That comes as the free market price of the dollar is currently above 1 million rials.

Beef and lamb are currently available at an average price of 10 million rials per kilogram in the Iranian markets.
