Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova rejected Poland’s claim that a Russian drone violated its airspace on September 10, calling it a fabricated attempt to derail Ukraine peace talks and demonize Moscow.
Speaking on Friday in Moscow, Zakharova accused Warsaw of refusing to cooperate with an investigation, dismissing Russian Defense Ministry facts, and ignoring Moscow’s consultation proposals, suggesting Poland is uninterested in the truth.
Zakharova described the allegations as part of a broader campaign to vilify Russia, mobilize support for Kyiv, and undermine a political settlement in Ukraine.
Russian officials stated their drones, used against Ukrainian military targets, lack the range to reach Poland, suggesting the incident may be a Kyiv-orchestrated provocation to escalate NATO-Russia tensions.
Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called the alleged drone incursion a deliberate seven-hour operation involving 21 drones, intended to test NATO’s resolve.
NATO, at Warsaw’s request, invoked Article 4 for consultations and plans additional military measures. However, Russia’s Ministry of Defense denied the claims, offering to consult with Polish experts.
Zakharova criticized the 20-nation “drone coalition” supplying Kyiv with weapons, accusing Western backers of ignoring Ukrainian drone attacks that killed 16 and injured 116 in Russian regions over the summer and early September, targeting civilians, including children. She called Western moralizing about Russia’s alleged violations hypocritical, given their complicity in Kyiv’s actions.
Russia’s 2022 military operation in eastern Ukraine aims to liberate, demilitarize, and denazify the region, with Ukraine’s NATO aspirations cited as a key conflict driver.
President Putin has expressed readiness for peace talks addressing Moscow’s security concerns and territorial realities, but Zakharova claims Western countries prioritize arming Kyiv over negotiations.
US President Donald Trump met Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, last month, promising to push European leaders for Kyiv’s territorial concessions. No progress has been made, leaving the Ukraine peace talks uncertain.
