Iran is expecting a bumper pistachio crop this year as the country hopes to earn more foreign currency revenues from its top agricultural export product.
A senior member of Iran’s National Pistachio Association said on Saturday that the country’s production of dried pistachios is expected to reach 0.24 million metric tons (mt) this year.
Jalil Karbaskhsh said that the output would represent an increase of around 9% from last year.
Karbaskhsh that Iran’s pistachio production may hit even higher records as the harvest will continue until late October.
He added that the southeastern province of Kerman will be responsible for half of Iran's total pistachio output this year.
Iran exported nearly 0.2 million mt of pistachios in the calendar year to late March, generating some $1.7 billion in revenues.
The country expects to increase its exports this year amid reports showing that Turkey, which is a major buyer of Iranian pistachio shipments, has lost nearly half of its domestic production because of drought.
Karbakhsh said that demand for Iranian pistachios has increased significantly in the Turkish confectionery industry.
He said that up to 25,000 mt of the Iranian pistachio crop will be supplied to the domestic market.
Figures released by the Iranian agriculture ministry in June showed that pistachio exports from the country had increased by more than 140% in the calendar year to March compared to the year before.
The figures showed that the cultivation area for pistachios in Iran had increased by 83% over the past 11 years to reach some 0.65 million hectares, making the crop the top horticulture product in the country.
