A 6.0 magnitude quake late Sunday hit a series of towns in the province of Kunar, near the eastern city of Jalalabad, causing extensive damage.

Some 800 people died and another 2,500 were injured in Kunar, the Taliban's chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, told a press conference in the capital Kabul, adding that 12 people were killed and 255 others injured in Nangarhar province, too.

In a message on Monday, President Pezeshkian said Iran is ready to cooperate with Afghanistan to provide the neighboring country with humanitarian relief aid.

He expressed deep grief at the tragic incident, which resulted in the death and injury of a number of people in the friendly and brotherly country of Afghanistan.

The Iranian president also hoped for immediate recovery of all the injured.

In a separate message, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi extended sympathy to the Afghan people and the bereaved families of the victims over the devastating earthquake.

Araghchi said Iran is fully prepared to dispatch relief and medical assistance to the quake-hit Afghan people.

He expressed hope that regional and joint cooperation would help Afghanistan alleviate the sufferings of the victims.

In another message, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also voiced the country’s readiness to help Afghanistan with the treatment of the injured.
