Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi says United Nations nuclear agency chief Rafael Grossi is to visit Tehran on Wednesday.
Gharibabadi said on Monday that the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is scheduled to hold meetings with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami.
“The trip falls within the framework of ongoing interaction and cooperation between the two sides,” he added.
Meanwhile, in a post on X, Grossi said, “Continued engagement and cooperation with the Agency is essential at a time when diplomatic solutions are urgently needed.”
He also confirmed that he will “travel to Tehran later this week”.
In a post on his X account in March, Gharibabadi hailed the “frank and constructive” discussion he had with Grossi at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna and said that Iran “remain committed” to cooperating with the UN nuclear agency.
“While safeguarding its national security and interests, Iran remains committed to cooperating with the IAEA within the framework of the agency’s Safeguards obligations,” the Iranian deputy foreign minister wrote.
The IAEA chief’s visit will come as Iran and the United States are scheduled to hold the second round of indirect talks, mediated by Oman, on Saturday.
On Saturday, the Iranian foreign minister and Steve Witkoff, the US president’s special envoy for West Asia affairs, led the first round of indirect talks in the Omani capital of Muscat. Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi played a mediatory role in the talks.
Both sides described the talks as positive and constructive, with Araghchi saying that the next round is expected to take place on April 19 at the same level.
Iran deputy FM in Russia to meet counterpart
In a meeting in Moscow on Monday, Gharibabadi and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Vershinin Sergey Vasilievich discussed the development of relations within the framework of international organizations.
Gharibabadi, who was in Oman for the indirect talks with the US on Saturday, visited Moscow to take part in a meeting of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations.
He met with Vasilievich at Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Iran’s embassy in Moscow reported. Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali was also present in the meeting.
The promotion of multilateralism, battle against unilateralism and initiatives to promote peace and security in the international community within the framework of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations were among the topics discussed between the Iranian and Russian diplomats.
