Russia’s Rosatom increases workforce at Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant
Rosatom says it is gradually increasing its workforce at Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, describing the situation at the facility as calm.
Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Russia’s state-owned Atomic Energy Corporation, said on Tuesday that the number of Rosatom employees who had returned to Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant had increased to 63.
Likhachev noted that Rosatom is steadily increasing the number of employees at Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant construction site in Iran.
“Yesterday, another 18 specialists joined our team at the plant. The team is working on the construction of Power Units 2 and 3 in cooperation with Iranian contractors. The number of members of the Russian team at the plant has reached 63,” the Rosatom chief said.
In March, Rosatom evacuated hundreds of staff after the United States and Israel launched their criminal war on Iran on February 28.
In a Tuesday statement, Likhachev said that currently, construction efforts are focused on building reactor buildings and turbine halls for two power units, with the first operational unit operating at full capacity.
“Taking regional conditions into account, we are increasing the number of employees. Safety is the top priority. The situation at the project site is currently calm; however, a significant increase in the number of our employees in Iran will only be possible once peace agreements between Iran and the United States have been finalized and stabilized,” he added.
Likhachev had previously announced on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi earlier this month that a number of the company’s specialists would enter Iran as part of scheduled maintenance work on the first unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.
At the time, he said that 47 of the company’s specialists had until then returned to Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant and that their number was expected to increase to 150.
Last year, Likhachev noted that the company was planning to construct two nuclear power units - each with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts - adjacent to the first unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, adding that construction was progressing.
Russia and Iran signed a contract for the construction of the first unit of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in 1995. The 1,000-megawatt facility started operating in 2011.
In 2014, Russia and Iran signed another deal for the construction of two new reactors at Bushehr, with a combined capacity of about 2,100 megawatts.
