Authorities in Gaza have decried as “colonialist” a video recently posted by US President Donald Trump on social media promoting his controversial plan to “take over” Gaza and displace Palestinians from the war-devastated strip.
The AI-generated video, which Trump shared on his own social media platform Truth Social late on Tuesday, depicts a fake scenario where the war-torn strip is transformed into a Riviera-style resort called "Trump Gaza."
It features the US president, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and tech billionaire Elon Musk enjoying their time in the luxury tourist destination.
“We strongly condemn this disgraceful video, which promotes rejected colonialist schemes targeting Gaza after the crime of forced displacement against our people, an act that constitutes a crime against humanity,” Ismail al-Thawabta, the head of Gaza’s government media office, told Anadolu on Thursday.
He noted that the video and its “degrading” content “reflect a colonialist mindset that distorts reality and seeks to justify Israeli occupation crimes by portraying Gaza as if it were a land without people.”
The official further described Trump’s actions as “a desperate attempt to legitimize the ethnic cleansing carried out by the Israeli occupation with clear US support.”
He urged the international community to take an immediate action “to curb Trump’s rhetoric and hold Israel accountable for forced displacement and ongoing violations against Palestinian civilians.”
Thawabta also called on “free nations” to stand against such plots, which are an extension of “colonialist projects” that have no place in the Palestinians’ homeland.
“Gaza has always been and will remain an integral part of Palestine,” he stressed, adding “Any attempt to turn it into a distorted entity disconnected from our deep-rooted history, culture and values is a colonialist illusion that will not succeed.”
Critics say the video portrays a vision of the Gaza Strip that erases its current destruction and suffering while proposing an American-led redevelopment project.
During the early days of his administration, Trump suggested that the people of Gaza either temporarily or permanently relocate out of the strip, including to Egypt and Jordan.
On February 4, Trump proposed that the US could take over Gaza and turn it into the “Riviera” of West Asia after clearing the Palestinians out, and resettling them elsewhere.
Trump’s remarks sparked widespread condemnations, including from Palestine, the UN and the Arab world, as a potentially fatal blow to the so-called two-state solution.
Trump’s provocative proposal came after the Israeli regime failed to realize its objectives in the war on the coastal strip for over 15 months, during which the regime killed at least 48,365 Palestinians, mostly women and children.
