The Daesh terrorist group in Afghanistan has claimed responsibility for the latest bombing attack that left at least five people dead and several others injured in the country’s northern province of Kunduz.

Daesh Khorasan (Daesh-K) made the announcement via the terrorist group’s Amaq propaganda wing after at least five people were killed when a bomber detonated the explosives strapped to his body outside a bank in Kunduz.

The blast occurred at 8:35 a.m. (0405 GMT) near the Kabul Bank branch in the northern province on Tuesday, killing the bank's security guard and four others, including civilians and members of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban group.

Provincial police spokesman Jumma Uddin Khakasr said seven people were wounded.

Amaq said a "suicide bomber" had "detonated his explosive vest" as "Taliban militia members gathered outside a public bank to collect their salaries."

Daesh-K claimed that "hundreds of Taliban, including security commanders," were killed in the bombing attack.

The terrorist group previously claimed responsibility for a similar bombing in March 2024, outside a bank in the southern city of Kandahar -- considered the spiritual heartland of the Taliban.

In December last year, Daesh also claimed responsibility for a bombing which killed the Taliban-ruled government's minister for refugees, Khalil Ur-Rahman Haqqani, in the capital Kabul.

Daesh has a foothold in eastern and northern Afghanistan, particularly in Nangarhar, which is regarded as its base in the war-torn country. It has in recent years claimed responsibility for several deadly attacks across Afghanistan and the region despite claims by Taliban authorities that they have mostly crushed the since returning to power in 2021.

Regional countries have held the United States and Britain responsible for the growth of the Daesh terrorist group in Afghanistan and the uptick in violence across the Asian country after the US abruptly withdrew its occupation forces from the country.
