The confrontation is becoming increasingly direct. After US forces struck three Iranian oil tankers, Iran fired ballistic missiles at US warships, forcing the USS George Washington and an accompanying destroyer to evade the incoming missiles, and that's according to the US military.

The economic consequences are spreading far beyond the battlefield. American consumers have already paid an estimated 100 billion dollars more for fuel.

And now Iran and Oman are moving toward a regional framework for managing shipping through Hormuz. So is America’s claims of “control” becoming increasingly difficult to reconcile with the reality on the water? And could Hormuz become the point where Iran’s military resilience and regional diplomacy begin to fundamentally reshape the US military presence in West Asia?
