Two groups of FBI agents have sued the US Justice Department over efforts to compile a list of employees involved in investigating Donald Trump’s supporters who stormed the US Capitol in 2021.

The agents filed two lawsuits on Tuesday, seeking an immediate halt to the collection and dissemination of the names of investigators who participated in the probes.

Approximately 1,500 of Trump’s supporters were released from jail following a wave of clemency issued by him just hours after he took office in January—a move that has sparked widespread concern among FBI agents, who fear the list could lead to retaliation from the Trump administration and pose a serious threat to their safety.

The Justice Department had reportedly demanded from the FBI the full names, offices, and titles of all employees involved in the investigations. Additionally, the employees were asked to complete a comprehensive questionnaire detailing their roles in the probes.

In response, the FBI turned over personnel details but only identified employees using unique identifier codes rather than names. The bureau warned that revealing their identities could place agents and their families in "immediate danger of retribution" from Trump’s supporters.

The acting Deputy Attorney General, Emil Bove, who defended Trump before joining his administration, said that the information would be reviewed by Trump appointees at the Justice Department to determine whether any “personnel actions” were necessary.

On Friday, Bove fired eight top FBI officials and 17 prosecutors who had worked on criminal cases related to the Capitol attack.

The push for retribution comes amid a surge in political threats and violence, including numerous menacing and intimidating messages sent to judges and prosecutors handling Trump’s legal cases.

Trump had defended the attack on Capitol Hill, saying it represented "the greatest movement in the history of our country,” when thousands of people marched against the certification of the 2020 election, which placed Joe Biden in office.
