Putin lauds ‘strategic’ Russia-Iran relations, expects further enhancement

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised “strategic” relations between his country and Iran, stating that friendly ties between the two neighboring states have dynamically improved in recent years.

Putin made the remarks in a Thursday meeting with Secretary General of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Akbar Ahmadian on the sidelines of a meeting of BRICS security officials in Russia’s port city of St. Petersburg.

The Russian leader said Tehran-Moscow relations have developed, thanks to the support of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, calling on Iran’s security chief to convey his best and kindest wishes to the Leader.

Putin said Russia’s western city of Kazan is set to host the 16th BRICS Summit from October 22 to 24, stating that he plans to meet and hold talks with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian on the fringes of the event.

Russia also expects a separate trip by President Pezeshkian for a joint comprehensive cooperation agreement between the two countries to be signed, he added.

The Russian president noted that his country is determined to cooperate with Iran in all fields, stating that the volume of trade exchanges between Moscow and Tehran has increased by almost 10 percent in the first six months of the current year.

Putin also said the development of the North-South Corridor is among the projects that the two countries attach great attention to.

For his part, the top Iranian security official underscored that the new administration of the Islamic Republic will continue promotion of relations with Russia.
