Russia-Ukraine conflict: Day 28

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine is going on in accordance with the plans and the purposes established beforehand. In an exclusive interview with CNN, the Kremlin official, however, noted that Russia has not achieved its goals in Ukraine yet. Peskov reiterated that the main goals of Russia’s operation are to get rid of the military potential of Ukraine, to ensure it remains a neutral country, and to get rid of nationalist forces. Peskov added that Ukraine must also accept that Crimea is part of Russia and the breakaway regions of Luhansk and Donetsk are independent states. Peskov warned that Russia may consider using nuclear weapons if its existence is threatened. The Kremlin spokesman said Russian forces only attack military targets, rejecting reports of airstrikes against civilians.

US-Philippines war games

The United States and the Philippines will start their largest-ever joint military drills next week, amid tensions in the South China Sea. US officials say some 9,000 American and Filipino troops will take part in the 12-day exercise on the main island of Luzon. They say the war games will boost maritime security, counter-terrorism, and live-fire training. The drills are part of annual maneuvers that have focused on a potential conflict in the South China Sea. So far, no reaction has been seen from Beijing. But in the past, it has warned that the US is trying to build an Indo-Pacific version of NATO. China claims the area in its entirety. It has even reinforced its stance by building artificial islands there and installing weapons on them. But the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam all have competing claims to the waters. US warships often sail close to the islands, drawing warnings from China of dangerous consequences.

New Orleans tornado

Emergency responders are conducting search and rescue operations after a powerful tornado batters parts of the US city of New Orleans, causing damage and destruction. The tornado has destroyed homes and knocked down power lines in the city, leaving thousands without electricity. Authorities say several houses have been totally destroyed. Meanwhile, the powerful storm blew off roofs and knocked over trees and utility poles in the city’s Arabi neighborhood, where one person was killed. There are reports of several injuries. Much of southern Louisiana is still recovering from Hurricane Ida which killed more than 100 people last August.
