Solidarity with hunger strikers

Thousands of Palestinians in Israeli jails are refusing their meals in a show of solidarity with six prisoners already on lengthy hunger strikes to protest their detention. More than 4,500 Palestinians have joined the one-day action. Palestinian officials say the six hunger striking inmates are suffering from serious health conditions, especially two of them who have also been in hospital. The pair has been on hunger strike for 106 and 116 days now. All the six prisoners want an end to their indefinite imprisonment without charge or trial under Israel’s so-called administrative detention policy. Last month, UN experts expressed grave concern about the lives of the Palestinian hunger strikers. They called on Israel to completely end its unlawful practice of administrative detention. According to Palestinian rights group Addameer, some 4,600 Palestinians are now in Israeli jails.

Iraq assassination attempt

Iran reacts to the attempted assassination of the Iraqi prime minister, saying it is a new sedition that can be traced back to foreign think tanks.

Sudan anti-coup campaign

Tensions remaining high in Sudan, almost two weeks after the military takeover there. Protesters have now launched two days of civil disobedience and strikes in protest at the coup. Shops were shuttered, roads blocked in the capital Khartoum with the city less busy than usual. Disruptions to internet and phone services, however, seemed to have limited participation. The protests were organized by trade unions and the so-called local resistance committees. A teacher’s union said military forces used tear gas to break up a sit-in outside the education ministry in Khartoum. It said five people were arrested. Mass rallies are also planned for Tuesday to push for full civilian rule. On October 25, Sudan’s military declared a state of emergency and detained civilian leadership. The coup is the culmination of tensions between the country’s civilian and military rulers since the overthrow of president Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
