US Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Jack Reed has speculated that Afghan capital Kabul “will hold” as Taliban gains more ground in the country.
"I think Kabul will hold," Reed NBC News. "The question is, can it hold long enough to create a political solution between the sides?”
He further claimed that Taliban has been preparing for attacks for a long time.
“What is — what you've seen is the encroachment of the Taliban, most of that has been without military action, most of that has been essentially going in and persuading or paying off the local leadership and, and they've been preparing for that for many, many months."
The Democrat supports President Joe Biden’s withdrawal of US forces from the war-ravaged country but disagrees with former President Donald Trump’s deal with Taliban.
"I think it was [a mistake], because I think it set a fixed date, rather than imposing conditions that would have then let us depart Afghanistan," Reed said. "And it also — most of the conditions on, the Taliban were unenforceable. They claimed that they would disassociate themselves from al Qaeda, clearly that's not the case."
Biden himself has previously claimed that it is unlikely that Taliban will be “owning the whole country.”
The Pentagon has also warned of a “deteriorating security situation” in Afghanistan following the 20-year war on the country on the pretext of fighting terrorism.
