The Pakistani government is in hot water after one of its coalition partners announced its decision to quit the ruling alliance. The announcement comes at a time when Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party needs the support of its allies to have the national budget passed in Parliament.
The future of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ruling party hangs in the balance after one of its allies namely Baluchistan National Party decided to withdraw its support for the government which until recently had a very slim majority in the Parliament.
At the heart of the decision of Baluchistan National Party, is the government’s failure to implement an agreement to release hundreds of missing citizens detained by the secret services over their alleged involvement in terrorist incidents.
National Party’s leaders have also demanded more funds for the development of southwestern provinces which they complained were not provided despite repeated promises the government had made with them.
Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ruling Pakistan Tehreek Insaaf party emerged as the single largest political force in 2018’s general elections but it lacked the required majority in Parliament to form the government. Therefore, his party had entered into an alliance with several other political parties.
The future of ruling party now appears to be in the hands of the Opposition parties. If they unite, they could dislodge Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government, something easier said than done given that many of Oppositions leaders have been politically compromised for being on trial for money laundering charges.
