Chinese artist makes dead leaves live forever through unique carving skill

Lei Ting, a young woman from Yushan County in the Chinese Jiangxi Province, carves delicate artworks on fallen leaves using a craft knife.

As a fashion stylist who never studied painting or sculpture before, Lei learned the unique skill of leaf-carving through self-study, after finding a unique pattern in a fallen leaf eaten by worms years ago.

"It's very complicated to make a carved leaf. The selected leaf needs dozens of processes like dipping, trimming, kneading and many artistic skills like painting and paper-cutting. It takes several months to finish one single leaf-carving artwork," said Ting, explaining the challenges of her artwork.

In addition to traditional patterns, Lei plans to create a comic strip on a series of leaves and tell stories through this special carving art.
