The Iranian men's national wheelchair basketball team has maintained its winning streak at the group stage of the 2017 Men’s U23 World Wheelchair Championship in Canada, registering a convincing victory over the Italian team.
In a match staged at Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto on Monday, the Iranian physically-challenged athletes beat their Italian counterparts 60-56.
Iran is scheduled to take on Britain in its quarterfinal showdown on Wednesday.
Earlier in the tournament, the Iranian outfit had clinched a 59-47 victory over Brazil in its fourth match of the tournament.
On June 10, the Iranians fell to a 59-67 defeat to the hosts in their third game. They had previously conceded a 53-71 loss to Turks in their second fixture the previous day.
Iran national under-23 wheelchair basketball team trounced Australia 72-68 in its opening match on June 8.
The national Iranian squad comprises Amir Reza Ahmadi, Mehdi Mandegar, Ali Karimi Kordabadi, Mojtaba Kamali, Mohammad Hassan Sayyari, Homayoun Asgari Mehrabadi, Mehdi Abbasi Shotoriyeh, Payman Mizan, Hassanali Ka’abi Amir, Seyyed Mehdi Mousavi as well as Reza Eyvazi, who are under the tutelage of head coach Hassan Palar. Hadi Rezaei is the manager of the squad.
The 2017 Men’s U23 World Wheelchair Championship started in Toronto, Canada, on June 8 and will run through June 16, 2017.
Twelve countries, namely Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Turkey and the United States, have taken part in the tournament.
