Zarif represents Iran at Ancient Civilizations Forum in Athens

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says he is in Athens to take part in the international Forum of Ancient Civilizations in the Greek capital as the representative of the Islamic Republic.

“In Athens, to represent Iran at Ancient Civilizations Forum: Dialogue among Civilizations for a World Against Violence and Extremism,” Zarif said on his official Twitter account on Sunday.

In December 2013, the United Nations General Assembly overwhelmingly voted to approve Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s initiative known as "World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE)," which called on all nations across the globe to denounce violence and extremism.

The Iranian president had proposed the initiative in his address to the UN Disarmament Conference in New York on September 25, 2013.

Greece’s Foreign Ministry will host the international Forum of Ancient Civilizations in Athens on Monday in a bid to promote cultural heritage and cooperation between the 10 participating countries, including Greece, Egypt, Bolivia, India, Iraq, Iran, Italy, Mexico, China and Peru.

The ten countries represent more than 40 percent of the world population and are at the center of international political developments in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa.

The Iranian foreign minister arrived in Athens on Sunday on a two-day visit to attend the international forum and hold talks with the country’s senior officials.
