A Rio de Janeiro police officer has confessed to murdering Greece's ambassador to Brazil, possibly under directions from the diplomat's wife, police sources say.

Local TV quoted the sources as saying on Friday afternoon that the officer, Sergio Moreira, 29, confessed to killing Kyriakos Amiridis on December 26.

The ambassador’s wife, Francoise, who is Brazilian, is in police custody.

Police investigators said they believed Francoise and Moreira had arranged the murder in advance, the TV reported.

Police found a burned corpse on Thursday evening inside a car that Amiridis had rented.

Police and Rio state security officials declined to comment on their investigation. The Greek embassy in Brasilia declined to comment, as well.

In Athens, Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman Stratos Efthymiou said the government had no comment.

Efthymiou earlier said that "unfortunately there has not yet been identification of the body" and that "we are awaiting the conclusion of the Brazilian coroner" to make a statement.

"However, it is not a good sign that the (burned out) car was rented by our ambassador," Efthymiou said.

On Thursday, police confirmed that the ambassador had been missing since Monday night, when he was last seen leaving the home of his wife's family in a poor and violent suburb of Rio.

The ambassador was reported missing by his wife on Wednesday.
