5 Ukrainian soldiers killed in fresh clashes with pro-Russians

Here is a round-up of global news developments:

  • Five Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and four injured in fresh clashes with pro-Russians east of Ukraine. The Ukrainian military says this has been the second largest daily casualty toll this year. A ceasefire signed in 2015 has failed to quell the fighting in Ukraine's east.
  • A fire has broken out in a village near Ukraine's capital, Kiev, leaving at least seventeen people dead. The victims were residents of a two-story building that housed elderly people in the village of Litochky. The fire is now under control. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
  • French Prime Minister Manuel Valls says he is determined not to bow down to demonstrators protesting planned labor reforms. A French newspaper quoted Valls as saying the government will lose everything if it is not firm on the reforms proposal and gives in to street protests.
  • The UN refugee agency says over 700 refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to enter Europe are feared dead . UNHCR spokeswoman, Carlotta Sami, says the asylum seekers lost their lives after three ships sank off the Italian coast.
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says his country will continue fighting against the Kurdistan Workers Party. He called the P-K-K militants atheists and Zoroastrians, accusing them of destroying mosques. Erdogan also slammed the US for supporting Kurdish fighters in Syria.
  • Iran’s Culture Minister says the country will not send pilgrims to Hajj rituals this year. Ali Jannati added that Saudi officials have failed to respond to Iran’s demands and take the required measures to make the pilgrimage possible for Iranians. Hundreds of Iranians were killed in a stampede at last year's Hajj.
  • Iraqi forces have discovered underground tunnels built by Daesh terrorists outside the city of Fallujah. The group used the tunnels to approach and escape from the front-line. Fallujah fell to Daesh in 20-14. Iraqi troops have launched a new offensive to liberate the city from the terrorist group.
  • Two people have been injured in a shooting incident near the University of Louisville in the US state of Kentucky. Footage filmed by a passerby shows a group of people arguing before the shooting. Police are investigating the incident. Gun violence kills nearly 90 people in the US every day.
