Iran Greco-Roman wrestler Rezaei wins silver at world championships
Iranian Greco-Roman wrestler Ghasem Rezaei has exhibited dazzling performances at the 12th edition of World Wrestling Championships in the United States, earning a silver medal in the prestigious international sports event.
On Monday, day one of the Greco-Roman contests, the 35-year-old Iranian sportsman, who had had a bye in the first round, emerged triumphant 4-2 in his first bout against Russian rival Islam Kurbanovich Magomedov in the 98-kilogram weight class at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Rezaei then overcame his Cuban opponent Yasmany Daniel Lugo Cabrera 5-0 in the next round, before notching up a 4-0 victory against Turkey’s Cenk Ildem in the quarterfinal round.
The Iranian stunned 32-year-old Elis Guri of Bulgaria 3-0 in the semifinals, and qualified for the final bout, where he conceded a 3-0 defeat to Armenia’s Artur Aleksanyan and scooped up the silver.
The 12th edition of World Wrestling Championships opened in Las Vegas, the United States, on September 7, and will finish on September 12.
Dozens of sportsmen and women from various countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Estionia, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Norway, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Turkey and Ukraine are taking part in the event.
Male Greco-Roman wrestlers vie in the 59-kilogram, 66-kilogram, 71-kilogram, 75-kilogram, 80-kilogram, 85-kilogram, 93-kilogram and 130-kilogram weight categories on September 7 and 8.
Freestyle athletes will be competing from September 10 to 12 to clinch a medal in the 57-kilogram, 61-kilogram, 65-kilogram, 70-kilogram, 74-kilogram, 86-kilogram, 97-kilogram and 125-kilogram sections.
Female freestyle wrestlers will be also in action in the 48-kilogram, 53-kilogram, 55-kilogram, 58-kilogram, 60-kilogram, 63-kilogram, 69-kilogram and 75-kilogram weight classes on September 9 and 10.
