Pro-government forces in Iraq have retaken a key position from Daesh Takfiri militants near the country’s biggest oil refinery.

A report on the Iraqi News on Monday said that members of the Hezbollah Battalions, a popular force fighting Daesh in north Iraq, managed to recapture Albu Jarad hilltop near Baiji and seized control of the main road linking the area to the facility.

Other reports said Iraq’s Air Force also launched an attack on the positions of Daesh inside the city of Baiji, which is located nearly 40 kilometers north of the city of Tikrit in the northern Iraqi Salahuddin Province. The Arabic-language al-Forat news agency said Iraqi fighter jets destroyed a number of tanks and armored vehicles belonging to Daesh, killing a number of the militants there.

The advance came as Iraqi forces and volunteer fighters continued to make gains in a simultaneous operation against Daesh in the western Anbar Province, with reports saying they have captured the main train station in the provincial capital, Ramadi.

Earlier in the day, the allied forces also launched an attack on the hideouts of militants in the Husaybah neighborhood, east of Ramadi, killing 12 Daesh terrorists. A similar attack by the Iraqi army in west of Ramadi killed three Daesh commanders.

Pro-government forces have already managed to push back Daesh from some key cities and towns across Iraq, including Tikrit, which was completely purged of militants in late March. The allied forces are planning to retake Anbar before they start their long-anticipated drive toward Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, which itself fell into the hands of Daesh last year.
