A senior Iranian official says the Islamic Republic is switching from a defensive approach to an offensive one as it is losing hope in the United States’ commitment to the path of diplomacy, according to a report.
The official, whose name was not mentioned, made the remarks on Monday, amid a stalemate in talks between Tehran and Washington to permanently end the war due to the latter’s acts of adventurism in the region.
"Iranian entities must be prepared to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider region, as Iran will be ready to make decisions and take action on difficult decisions," the official told Reuters.
"It is a proven fact that the United States is not serious about a ceasefire and won't commit to any, so putting pressure on the enemy or relying on mediators in the hope of reaching a permanent ceasefire is not realistic.”
He was referring to the Pakistan-brokered Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the US on June 17. The 60-day window established in the deal for the two sides to negotiate a lasting agreement closed on Monday.
The United States had violated the MoU by resuming its aerial assaults on Iran and imposing a naval blockade of the country, prompting Iran to conduct reprisal strikes and declare the Strait of Hormuz closed to all traffic.
The official said if the United States fails to implement the war-termination deal fully in a matter of weeks, Iran would conduct a "timely and precise" military attack.
"Within the short period of a few weeks set by Iran, all the agreement's provisions must be implemented by the US. This is a precondition for further negotiations," he added, noting that mediators would share details of Tehran's deadline with Washington and regional states.
The United States and Israel launched their illegal war of aggression against Iran on February 28 by assassinating the late Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, along with senior military commanders.
Forty days later, on April 8, the enemies were forced to accept a ceasefire amid Iran’s resistance, decisive retaliatory operations, and a powerful grip on the Strait of Hormuz.
