Direct talks with Israel while aggression persists ‘meaningless’: Lebanese MP

Ali Khreis, a member of the Development and Liberation bloc – the political wing of the Amal Movement – in the Lebanese parliament

A Lebanese legislator has censured the so-called US-sponsored framework agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv, saying that face-to-face negotiations with the Israelis are “meaningless” as long as the regime presses ahead with its acts of aggression against Lebanon.

“We are staunchly opposed to face-to-face negotiations with the Zionist enemy, the framework agreement, as well as the so-called ‘pilot zones,’” Ali Khreis, a member of the Development and Liberation bloc, said.

“What is strictly necessary is the complete and unconditional pullout of Israeli soldiers. Why doesn’t the enemy withdraw from the occupied territories in the first place?”

He added that the Lebanese government must work towards reconstruction and deployment of Lebanese army troops throughout the country.

“The Zionist enemy, as usual, does not act honestly and resorts to deception and lies,” Khreis, who is a member of the political wing of the Amal Movement, pointed out.

Lebanon and Israel signed a framework agreement on June 26, mediated by the United States, which outlines a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from all occupied territories in Lebanon, starting with a pilot model in two zones that have not been publicly revealed.

The agreement does not establish a timeline for the withdrawal, tying its completion to the Lebanese army taking full security responsibility in the areas that have been evacuated and the disarmament of armed groups, specifically referring to Hezbollah.

According to official Lebanese statistics, Israeli assaults in Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of at least 4,324, injured 12,223 others, and displaced more than 1 million individuals since March 2.

Israel maintains its occupation of regions in southern Lebanon, with some territories held for many years and others usurped during the onslaught of 2023-24.
