Iran, France FMs discuss Islamabad MoU implementation

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi (R) and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot have discussed regional and international developments in light of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding between Tehran and Washington and its implementation process.

In a phone call on Tuesday, the two ministers exchanged views on efforts to end the US and Israeli regime’s aggression against Iran, as well as the latest regional and international developments related to the MoU’s provisions.

Iran on Monday rejected a French-backed proposal to cooperate on demining the Strait of Hormuz, warning Paris against provocations that could further complicate the sensitive maritime situation.

Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi said in a post on X that under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding, demining operations in the strategic waterway would be carried out “exclusively by Iran” and not by any other country.

“We strongly advise France not to make the situation more complicated with its provocations,” Gharibabadi said.

His remarks came after French President Emmanuel Macron said that France and Oman had decided to work jointly, in coordination with partners, on demining the Strait of Hormuz to secure maritime routes and ensure “free and unconditional” passage through the strategic waterway.
