Iran-Russia naval drills

Iran and Russia are holding joint naval exercises in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean in a bid to boost bilateral military cooperation and security in the region. Special operations teams from the Iranian Army, the IRGC, and the Russian Navy successfully executed a high-stakes joint simulation to liberate a hijacked vessel. In a synchronized assault from air and sea, Special Forces boarded the target vessel, apprehended the simulated pirates, and secured the ship. Officials say the exercises are aimed at improving coordination in countering threats to maritime safety and combating terrorism. The drills also focus on expanding joint cooperation and strengthening relations between the two navies in the design and implementation of combined operations.

El-Fasher genocide

An independent UN probe has found that Rapid Support Forces committed genocide in the Sudanese city of El-Fasher last October. The fact-finding mission in its report said what happened in the city was not random and the perpetrators planned and organized their atrocities. The mission interviewed 320 witnesses and victims from El-Fasher. It said survivors consistently spoke of indiscriminate shootings, mass executions, and described seeing roads filled with the bodies of men, women and children. The report said widespread sexual violence targeted women and girls from non-Arab communities. The UN mission demanded that perpetrators be brought to justice. Since April 2023, the conflict between Sudan's army and the paramilitary RSF has killed tens of thousands of people. The Sudanese government has repeatedly accused UAE of sending arms and financial support to RSF group.

South Korea court ruling

A South Korean court has found the former president Yoon Suk Yeol guilty of masterminding an insurrection over his short-lived imposition of martial law in 2024. The court sentenced Yoon to life in prison over insurrection. It also convicted and sentenced several former military and police officials involved in enforcing Yoon’s martial law decree, including the former defence minister and former prime minister. The verdict followed a separate ruling last month, when Yoon was given a five-year prison term for attempting to obstruct his arrest after being impeached and suspended from office. Yoon has maintained his innocence, arguing that he had presidential authority to declare martial law.
