'End extermination of Palestinians'

The chairman of the African Union Commission says the extermination of Palestinians by Israel must stop as he calls for the peaceful resolution of global conflicts. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf made the statement at the 39th Summit of the African Union in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. He has previously used the AU platform to voice support for Palestinians during the Gaza war. The Union has long maintained a consistent position backing Palestinian statehood and self-determination. In May 2025, it formally submitted a legal position to the International Court of Justice regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the Occupied Palestinian Territory. In 2023, despite US and EU mediation, AU officials expelled Israeli delegates from a summit session after revoking the regime’s observer status.

Austria anti-Muslim law

Protesters in Austria are demanding the government overturn a controversial law that bans headscarves in schools for girls, calling the move Islamophobic. The law passed last year will affect at least 12,000 girls in public and private schools, banning those under 14 from wearing traditional Muslim head coverings. The government says the measure promotes gender equality, but critics argue it will fuel anti-Muslim sentiment. Austria’s Muslim community group, IGGO, says the ban will further stigmatize and marginalize Muslim women and girls. The organization says the law violates fundamental rights and plans to challenge its constitutionality. A similar 2020 bill was struck down by the Constitutional Court, which ruled that targeting a specific religious minority breaches the principle of equality.

US deadly Caribbean strikes

The US military says it has killed three people in a strike on a boat in the Caribbean, in the latest such incident in recent months. The US Southern Command, which oversees military operations in Latin America and the Caribbean, has released footage that alleges to show the missile attack. It claimed in a post on X that the targets were narco-traffickers. Since September, the US has carried out some 38 attacks against 40 vessels in the eastern Pacific and Caribbean Sea, killing at least 133 people. Washington claims the attacks are aimed at drug traffickers in the region. International law and human rights experts have repeatedly said such attacks amount to extrajudicial executions, with the victims having a right to due process under the law.
