US ‘must be held accountable’ for interference, support for terrorism in Iran: Araghchi

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called for holding the United States legally accountable for blatant interference in Iran’s internal affairs, denouncing Washington for backing organized terrorist violence aimed at destabilizing the country following recent riots.

In an article published on Tuesday in KHAMENEI.IR, Araghchi stated that recent organized terrorist operations have once again exposed “the true nature of the United States’ behavior toward Iran,” while raising a broader question for the international community regarding unchecked foreign interference in sovereign states.

He noted that organized acts of violence carried out between January 8 and 10 were not spontaneous protests but part of a “calculated and organized project” backed by the United States and the Zionist regime.”

“Training, equipping, and directing criminal elements, explicit incitement to violence, and efforts to destabilize Iran’s internal security are all components that render these events far beyond peaceful protests. Instead, they represent acts of terrorism with significant implications under international law,” he added.

His remarks come after recent riots, during which terrorist groups carried out armed attacks against civilians, security forces, and public infrastructure as a means of trying to divert economic protests towards unrest.

The attacks followed incendiary remarks by US President Donald Trump, who threatened fresh military aggression against Iran in case of what he called the Islamic Republic’s potential confrontation with the protesters.

Intelligence officials have verified that the US- and Israeli-backed riotous elements were seeking to hijack the protests and ignite chaos as a means of paving the way for such aggression.

The Iranian minister stated that the unrest resulted in extensive damage to public infrastructure, including mosques, educational institutions, banks, hospitals, power facilities, and public stores, as well as the deaths of security personnel and civilians.

He added that the scale of destruction demonstrated an intent to disrupt public order and spread fear within society.

He also pointed to attacks on Iranian diplomatic and consular missions abroad, describing them as flagrant violations of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic and Consular Relations of 1961 and 1963. Such acts, he said, represent a serious breach of internationally recognized diplomatic norms.

Araghchi further cited public statements by US officials, including explicit expressions of support for the rioters and threats of force against Iran, as violations of core principles of international law.

He also condemned repeated threats made by US President Donald Trump against Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, denouncing them as an unprecedented violation of the principle of non-intervention and the customary international law norm regarding the inviolability of senior state officials.

Trump recently claimed that Iran’s leadership must change, as part of a broader psychological warfare campaign.

“These actions,” Araghchi went on, “will undoubtedly carry far-reaching legal and political consequences.”

The foreign minister announced that Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched sustained legal and diplomatic efforts to establish US responsibility for the US-Israeli aggression in June and the recent terrorist operations.

He said documentation of interventions and hostile actions is ongoing, and the necessary legal groundwork has been laid to pursue claims before competent national and international bodies.

“Iran will not forgo the rights of each and every Iranian citizen and will not allow support for terrorism to become a cost-free practice in the international system. The United States must be held accountable for its actions,” he added.
