UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territory Francesca Albanese has sharply criticized global institutions for failing to hold Israel accountable, praising a growing European boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest as a sign of shifting public conscience.
In a post on social media, Albanese argued that the absence of sanctions or suspensions has allowed the Gaza genocide to be “normalized.”
"Israel has not been suspended from the UN, international forums, UEFA, FIFA, FIBA, or cultural events," she wrote. "Genocide continues because it is normalized."
Her comments highlight a sustained pattern across political, sporting, and cultural spheres where Israel retains full membership and participation, a posture critics argue constitutes tacit approval of its military actions.
Against this backdrop, Albanese pointed to the mounting backlash against Israel’s inclusion in Eurovision as a rare break from the cycle of normalization.
She hailed the withdrawal of several European nations as the beginning of meaningful accountability.
"And then, just like that, accountability in the form of a European boycott begins. Eurovicious no more!" she said.
The movement to boycott the 2026 edition of the contest over its refusal to hold an internal vote on suspending Israel's participation has gained traction as governments face domestic pressure over their involvement in the contest.
Slovenia, Spain, the Netherlands, and Ireland have already confirmed they will not participate, citing Israel’s war crimes in Gaza as the reason for their withdrawal.
Iceland has also indicated it will hold further discussions on its participation status.
