Israeli troops have fatally shot two Palestinian men after one of them allegedly attempted to carry out a car-ramming operation in the southern part of the West Bank, as the regime’s forces have escalated their raids across the occupied territory.
The Israeli military said in a statement that the vehicle accelerated toward soldiers from the Paratrooper Brigade near a military roadblock in the city of al-Khalil late on Saturday before they opened fire.
The statement added that one soldier sustained light injuries.
Palestinian media outlets identified the victims as Ziad Na’im Jabara Abu Dawud, a 55-year-old municipal sanitation worker who happened to be in the area, and Ahmad Khalil Rajabi, 20.
Witnesses reported that Israeli occupation forces shot at Abu Dawud and left him to bleed to death, and only later transferred his body to the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) teams.
The PRCS reported that its medics transferred the body of Abu Dawud to al-Khalil Governmental Hospital, while Israeli forces refused to release the corpse of Rajabi and took his body away.
In a related development, Israeli forces abducted four young men at the entrance of al-Arroub refugee camp, north of al-Khalil.
Meanwhile, the Palestine Red Crescent Society reported that a man was injured by Israeli forces’ gunfire near the controversial separation wall in the town of al-Ram, northeast of occupied al-Quds.
Palestinian resistance fighters also targeted forces with an improvised explosive device as the latter launched a raid on the village of Silat al-Harithiya, located 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) northwest of Jenin. There were no immediate reports about possible casualties among occupation troops.
Palestinians in the West Bank are facing intensified Israeli military offensives and increasing acts of violence by settlers. This unfolds alongside the devastating war in Gaza, which has claimed the lives of over 70,000 people in the coastal region since October 2023.
For months, rights organizations have been warning that Palestinians in the West Bank face a growing threat of ethnic cleansing amid the continuing violence.
In July 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel’s prolonged occupation of historic Palestine was unlawful and called for the removal of all settlements currently in the West Bank and East al-Quds.
Although the court’s advisory opinion is not legally binding, it carries significant political weight as it represents the first instance in which the ICJ has examined the legality of the 57-year-long occupation.
