Atousa Golshadnezhad wins historic gold for Iran at World Karate Championships

Iranian karate athlete Atousa Golshadnezhad has made history, winning the first-ever women’s gold medal at the adult World Karate Championships in Egypt. 

The tournament, featuring athletes from 87 countries, took place in Cairo and saw Golshadnezhad securing the gold in the women’s 61 kg category on Sunday.

In the final match, Golshadnezhad faced Li Gang of China, the reigning world champion and gold medalist of the Hangzhou Asian Games, and despite initially falling behind 2–0, she staged a remarkable comeback to clinch the victory. 

Her journey to the top of the podium included notable victories, starting with an 8–0 win over Yombi Nelli of Cameroon, followed by a 2–1 win against Otobayoya from Uzbekistan and a 0–0 draw with Girovisia of Latvia, allowing her to advance to the round of 16. 

In the quarterfinals, she secured a referee decision win over Barbara of Chile and then achieved a 5–0 victory over Maria Arzuova of Belarus in the semifinals, ultimately reaching the final with a 4–1 victory over Wafa Mahjoub of Tunisia. 

Furthermore, Sara Bahmaniar earned a bronze medal in the women’s –50 kg category by defeating Lili Alvarado of Ecuador 3–0 in the classification match, marking her second world bronze after her previous medal in 2018. 

Additionally, Saleh Abazari is set to compete in the men’s +84 kg final against Italy’s Matteo Avanzini, aiming to secure another gold medal for Iran. 

The historic triumph by Golshadnezhad signifies a historic milestone for women’s sports in the country and the national karate program.
