Nearly 2 million Israelis suffering mental health issues following war in Gaza: Report

Local media say 2 million Israelis face mental health crisis after the regime’s 2 years of genocidal war in Gaza.

Israel is reportedly on the brink of a major mental health crisis affecting nearly two million individuals, including a substantial number of soldiers, as a result of Tel Aviv's two-year genocidal war in Gaza.

“Two million Israelis, including many soldiers, now require psychological support,” Yedioth Ahronoth daily reported on Monday.

It highlighted a significant increase in drug addiction as well as the disintegration of families and entire communities.

According to the report, although many Israelis believed that the war had already plunged society into a severe psychological crisis, there were increasing warnings that “a true disaster is still ahead."

The newspaper said experts and trauma survivors have highlighted a critical lack of therapists, noting that the most intense challenges often arise after the conflict concludes. They cautioned that future generations are likely to bear significant consequences.

It noted that Israel's mental health system has been in a prolonged crisis, which has intensified since the war began, with “a severe shortage of staff, long waiting times, and infrastructure unable to withstand the pressure.”

“A large part of our population – people who showed great strength and solidarity – now feel distressed and depressed after two years of war. We see it every day, now more than ever,” said Prof. Merav Roth, a clinical psychologist.

“In 2018, one in ten people in Israel met the threshold for addiction. Today, it is one in four. This rise is frightening,” Roth added, speaking about addiction trends.

There has been an increase in suicide incidents within the Israeli army as a result of combat conditions in Gaza.

Israel’s public broadcaster KAN reported 279 suicide attempts among soldiers and 36 confirmed suicides since the regime began the war in October 2023.

In a statement on Sunday, Israel's military chief announced the ouster of several top military officials and reprimand of others over the failures leading to the operation by the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Israel has killed nearly 70,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and injured over 170,900 others in Gaza since then.
