The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories says that European Union (EU) member states are directly enabling Israel's genocidal campaign in Gaza.
During a press conference at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday, Francesca Albanese said that the EU and its member states have neglected their international obligations toward Gaza and Palestine.
"It is a very grave situation that, particularly due to the objections of Germany and Italy, the suspension of the trade agreement with Israel has still not moved forward,” she remarked.
Albanese highlighted the ongoing ties between the EU and Israel, including arms shipments and Israel's involvement in the Horizon Europe research program.
She emphasized that the EU is not only inactive but is actively supporting the destruction of Palestine, noting, "In my view, the situation is so dire that it is beyond comment."
She pointed out that many violent Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank are citizens of European countries, with numerous Europeans having served in the Israeli army.
An ethnic cleansing is occurring in the West Bank, unprecedented in the last 80 years, and is accompanied by significant violence, she stated.
“How can we discuss the future of Palestine when the population is disappearing and much of the land intended for the independent state of Palestine has been destroyed or is under occupation," she said.
Albanese warned of a looming genocide in the West Bank and the risk of complicity, stressing that this complicity threatens not only the survival of Palestine but also the fundamental values of the EU.
Albanese condemned US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza, saying it violates international law.
She cited last year’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, declaring Israel’s occupation of Gaza, the West Bank, and East Al-Quds unlawful.
She stated that victims of Israeli violence must receive compensation and that displaced Palestinians must be allowed to return.
Responding to a question about disarming the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas and removing it from power in Gaza, Albanese emphasized the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.
“Palestinians can vote for someone [Western powers] do not like. But that is not our concern. What concerns us is that Palestinians live freely and in peace," she said.
Albanese also called for the immediate suspension of the EU and the Israeli regime military cooperation agreement.
Since Israel launched its genocidal assault on Gaza on October 7, 2023, at least 69,500 Palestinians have been killed and 179,000 wounded, most of them women and children.
