Tehran dismisses Israeli claim of ambassador assassination plot as ‘baseless, ridiculous’

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman has strongly dismissed Israeli claims that Tehran attempted to assassinate the Israeli ambassador to Mexico, calling the allegations “baseless and truly ridiculous.”

Speaking during a weekly press conference on Monday, Esmaeil Baghaei said the allegation was part of “the Zionist regime’s plans to destroy Iran’s friendly relations with other countries.”

“It is interesting why they chose Mexico. One of the reasons for this is revenge on Mexican public opinion, which has expressed its views very clearly in recent months in protest against the genocide in Gaza,” he added.

Baghaei noted that both the Mexican Foreign Ministry and intelligence services had denied the existence of such a plot, underlining that similar false accusations had previously been made in Australia, which later proved unfounded.

Trump’s confession registered at UN

Referring to US President Donald Trump’s public acknowledgment of US involvement in the Israeli aggression against Iran in June, Baghaei said that Tehran “immediately registered Trump’s confession as a document in the United Nations and the Security Council.”

He underscored that this admission “entails full responsibility of the US government” and would be used in future international legal proceedings.

Trump, who spoke at the White House on Thursday night, appeared to take full responsibility for what Washington had previously called an Israeli-only action.

“Israel attacked first. That attack was very, very powerful. I was very much in charge of that,” Trump said.

This comes as Trump had long campaigned as a “peace” candidate who claimed to oppose starting new wars.

Baghaei also pointed out that Trump’s claim of wanting an agreement with Iran is contrary to reality, emphasizing that the Americans pretend to seek negotiations but, in truth, they do not.

He said this behavior is deceptive, noting that in practice, they have repeatedly shown that “they do not have any good intentions or seriousness in this regard.”

US-Israeli actions threat to all principles of international law

In response to a question regarding the objectives of the international conference “International Law Under Aggression; Aggression and Defense,” to be held in Tehran, Baghaei said the conference will focus on the issue of military aggression by the Zionist regime and the United States against Iran.

However, he stressed that the purpose extends beyond Iran’s case, adding, “we are actually carrying out an international task to draw the attention of the international community to a process that can violate all international standards and norms and international law.”

He described the aggression as “a very clear example of unilateralism and what is referred to as the ‘rule-based order,’” adding that similar patterns of behavior can be observed elsewhere.

“We see signs of the continuation of this very dangerous approach in other parts of the world; in addition to the West Asian region, the cases we are witnessing in the Caribbean and Latin America are a model for actions based on the use of force in our region,” the spokesman said.

NATO remarks merely a ridiculous projection

In response to recent statements by the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte claiming Iran and Russia are undermining global order, Baghaei called the remarks “a ridiculous projection.”

On Thursday, Rutte claimed that Russia is a “threat” to the bloc, adding, “Russia is not alone in its efforts to undermine the global rules. As you know, it is working with China, with North Korea, with Iran, and others. They are increasing their defense industrial collaboration to unprecedented levels.”

Baghaei noted that the important point regarding Rutte’s statements is that often the actions taken by NATO members themselves are blamed on others.

“It is enough to look at which side has violated international law—the Islamic Republic of Iran or NATO member states,” he said.

Citing NATO’s record in Afghanistan and other conflicts, Baghaei highlighted that Western powers “are the real violators of peace and security” and that Iran has consistently been a victim of their unlawful actions.

Lifting of sanctions a right, not a favor

In response to a question about Trump's recent remarks regarding the lifting of sanctions on Iran, the spokesman reiterated that the removal of unilateral US sanctions remains “a legitimate demand of the Iranian nation.”

“Sanctions have been a crime against humanity, affecting every Iranian,” Baghaei said. “Their removal is not a favor from the United States but a right that must be fulfilled.”

He emphasized that Iran would pursue the lifting of sanctions as a key condition in any future dialogue with Western countries.
