West’s ‘blackmail and ultimatums’ do not work with Iran: Russian envoy

Russia’s envoy to the international organizations in Vienna has sharply criticized Western powers for their continued reliance on threats and coercion in dealing with Iran’s nuclear program, saying such tactics have repeatedly failed.

Mikhail Ulyanov, the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation, told RIA Novosti that the United States and its European allies lack a coherent strategy for engaging Iran on the nuclear issue.

“By all indications, they are still inclined to rely on blackmail and ultimatums. Such methods do not work with Iran,” he said.

Ulyanov said the only path forward is “mutually respectful dialogue,” rooted in the recognition of both Iran’s obligations and its rights under the Nuclear Non‑Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

The remarks come after the expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

That agreement, signed by Iran, Russia, China, the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, lifted sanctions on Tehran in exchange for confidence-building limits on its nuclear program.

However, Washington unilaterally abandoned the deal in 2018 under Donald Trump, reimposing sanctions and prompting Iran to gradually scale back its commitments under the JCPOA.

Iran and the US held several rounds of talks to create a replacement for the 2015 nuclear deal earlier this year, before Israel and the US launched a joint aerial aggression against Iran.

The attacks, which damaged Iran's nuclear facilities and killed hundreds of civilians, came just two days before the sixth round of scheduled talks, derailing diplomacy.
