Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh says Tehran welcomes the expansion of defense and industrial cooperation with friendly and independent countries, including Belarus.

Nasirzadeh made the comment in a Thursday meeting with Belarusian State Military-Industrial Committee's Chairman Dmitry Pantus, who is in Tehran at the head of a delegation to take part in a session of the Iran-Belarus joint committee on military-technical cooperation.

He hailed growing ties between Tehran and Minsk, noting that Belarus has a special position in Iran’s foreign relations.

Pantus, for his part, said Iran enjoys extensive capacities in industrial and technological fields, and expressed his country’s keenness to promote bilateral cooperation in the sectors of research and development, production of defense equipment, and exchange of industrial experience.

The two sides discussed ways to develop bilateral cooperation in the fields of defense, technical, and industrial sectors and stressed the importance of deepening relations within the framework of common interests.

Nasirzadeh and Pantus said the two countries see eye to eye on many regional and international issues, and expressed their readiness to devise a roadmap for future cooperation.

They also stressed the need to accelerate the implementation of joint projects by utilizing the capacities of the two countries and those of regional and international organizations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Back in August, Iranian Army Chief Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi met with Commander of the Belarusian Air Force Major General Andrey Lukyanovich in Tehran.

During the meeting, the senior Iranian commander said that Tehran and Minsk face shared threats and interests as they are both under oppressive sanctions imposed by the West, not least the United States.
