Russia’s top energy officials have held talks with Iran’s Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad in Tehran amid reports that the two countries are finalizing pricing issues for a major gas transfer deal that would allow Russia to export sizable volumes of natural gas to Iran.
A report by the Iranian Oil Ministry’s news service Shana on Wednesday said that Russia’s Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov and CEO of the Russian state gas company Gazprom Alexey Miller had attended meetings with Paknejad earlier in the day in the Ministry’s headquarters in downtown Tehran.
Iranian ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Saeed Tavakoli also attended the meetings.
Jalali had said in early September that Iran and Russia would soon hold price negotiations on a major gas supply deal that was agreed between the two countries in June last year
He said that Iran would begin importing gas from Russia as soon as the price issues are resolved, adding that the supply would enhance Iran’s ability to meet the growing demand for gas in its industries during the upcoming winter.
Paknejad said after the meetings held on Wednesday that the talks had mostly focused on an upcoming session of an intergovernmental economic committee between Iran and Russia, adding that he would disclose more details about new bilateral agreements for increased cooperation.
Iran hopes the gas transfer deal with Russia will enable it to increase its gas exports to countries like Turkey and Iraq.
Reports have indicated that Iran will import 5 million cubic meters (mcm) per day of gas from Russia under a first phase of the gas deal, while volumes would increase to 55 million mcm per day in the second phase and to 110 million mcm per day in the third phase.
