Iran’s national freestyle wrestling team won the championship title on Monday evening with one day left in the competitions.

Iran's national freestyle wrestling team has secured the team championship at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, earning five medals and clinching the title ahead of schedule.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi congratulated the team, celebrating their impressive performance that marked Iran's sixth world title.

The championship was confirmed on Monday evening, with Iran ending a 12-year wait for global success.

The team finished with one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals, surpassing the United States and solidifying their lead with one day of competition remaining.

Notable performances included Amirhossein Zareh, who won gold in the 125kg category, and Ahmad Mohammadnejad-Javan, who took silver in the 61kg class.

Bronze medals went to Mohammad Nokhodi (79kg), Kamran Ghasempour (86kg), and Amirhossein Firoozpour (92kg).

Two Iranian wrestlers, Rahman Amouzad and Amirali Azarpira, will compete for gold in their respective weight classes on Tuesday.

This victory marks Iran's first world freestyle wrestling title since 2013, joining a prestigious list of championships from 1961, 1965, 1998, and 2002.

As the competition unfolds, the United States and Japan remain in contention for second place, with the USA currently holding an 8-point lead.

Coach Pejman Dorstkar congratulated the freestyle team's title victory in Zagreb, saying it marks a powerful chapter in Iran’s sports history.

Foreign Minister Araghchi expressed pride in the athletes, coaches, and supporters, praising their determination and teamwork.

He remarked on wrestling's historical significance in Iran and its ability to inspire national pride.

"Wrestling evokes the proudest and most enduring moments in our nation's collective memory," Araghchi stated, highlighting the athletes' thrilling battles, decisive wins, and respectful salutes to the Iranian flag that inspired millions of Iranians back home.

The championships held at Arena Zagreb from September 13-21 showcased Iran's prowess against formidable rivals, including the United States and Russia.

With continued success anticipated in both the remaining weight classes and the women’s freestyle divisions, Iran's triumph reinforces its status as a wrestling powerhouse on the international stage.
